New Harvest
Research Services
Trusted, independent, and empirically driven non-profit building the field of cellular agriculture
About us
We are spearheading the next agricultural revolution: Cellular Agriculture. Cellular agriculture allows us to make milk, eggs, meat, leather, fur, rhino horn, and any other animal products from cell cultures rather than from animals. Cellular agriculture is a groundbreaking field that is still not adequately supported by established funding channels. This is where New Harvest comes in: 1) We coordinate and catalyze funding into open cellular agriculture research, engaging external funding and partnerships as much as possible to grow the pool of people and institutions truly invested. Every piece of research we fund strategically contributes to building the field, so that the whole of research we fund is greater than the sum of its parts. Like all pioneering scientific organizations, we fund neglected work. 2) We convene the community that is building this field (scientists, academia, funders, industry, policy-makers, regulatory authorities, etc.), fostering collaboration and a divide-and-conquer attitude. 3) We inform stakeholders and the public at large (from mass media to teaching cellular agriculture in universities) to draw more funds, talent, and acceptance to the field. We are planting the seeds of a new bioeconomy by supporting pioneers in the emerging field of cellular agriculture.

🚨 New Consortium Alert! Over the next 3 years, 36 groups from 17 countries will collaborate on delivering a comprehensive, unbiased knowledge base about cultured meat and seafood and their place in the food system. FEASTS (Fostering European cellular-Agriculture for Sustainable Transition Solution), is the first project of its kind funded by the EU. The grant proposal was largely structured through the lens of our paper from 2021, “Cultured Meat Needs a Race to Mission, Not a Race to Market” which highlights where collaboration and focus can best be applied to achieve the mission of cultured meat. New Harvest Netherlands is proud to be one of the 36 participating groups. Kudos to our very own Dwayne Holmes, PhD and the other consortium members! https://lnkd.in/g9GXinF7

In January 2022 we were invited to contribute to a new textbook being assembled by Professor Mark Post, Professor Che Connon, and Dr. Chris Bryant. The editors wanted New Harvest to write a chapter on the infrastructure of cultured meat. We're thrilled to share that the book, Advances in cultured meat technology is now available for pre-order at £140.00… But even better, our chapter, Creating an infrastructure for cultured meat is available completely free and open access at the link below. An incredible team made this possible: Thank you to Irfan Tahir for leading us through this work over nearly two years of writing and editing; to New Harvest board member Miranda Stahn for her writing and perspective; to New Harvest Fellows Stephanie Kawecki, Vicky Andriessen and Bianca Datta, Ph.D. for their work on content and editing; to New Harvest Director of RRI – EU Dwayne Holmes, PhD for his experience and perspective, and last but not least to New Harvest board member Lejjy G. for his point of view and generous contribution which made this chapter available to any curious reader with the internet access. Give it a read: hhttps://lnkd.in/g4Rq6MnQ

CellAgri Portugal is doing an incredible job rallying together a diverse set of voices and stakeholders to build the field of cellular agriculture in Portugal. Incredible to see this group pull together an international set of speakers, the local mayor, a government minister, a major poultry producer, several scientific companies, and the best conference catering I've ever had (!!!) all together for an inaugural event, on a shoe-string budget no less. It's local events like THESE - smaller, intimate, and invested groups - that feel like real firsts, real sites of change, real loci of leadership. Was an honor to keynote this event with a new talk inspired by all the international, localized field building we're seeing. There is something structurally new and exciting about cellular agriculture happening. Great work to Carlos Rodrigues, Sara M. Oliveira, Frederico Ferreira and the rest of the team, and everyone mentioned Sara's post below! Lastly a huge shoutout to my colleague Dwayne Holmes, PhD, New Harvest's Director in the EU. On multiple occasions various attendees shared how much his facilitative leadership provided strategic support without taking spotlight. This is a theme of our work: empowering emerging leadership, and he's really embodying this on the ground in Europe. Looking forward to seeing more local activations like this in the future - CellAgri Portugal you have set an inspirational bar for others to follow. Onwards!

✔📌 Thank you all! Together, we've accomplished something remarkable. 👏👏 What an amazing experience! The energy was electric, and it was a true testament to the power of bringing like-minded people together. This conference was more than an event. We worked tirelessly to unite people, ignite motivation, inspire, and promote synergies for the growth of our field in Portugal. Some years ago, we were only a few Gonçalo F. Fernando 😉, and I can tell we are both particularly happy about this achievement! From my initial concept of working on cultivated meat, it took six years to reach this turning point 🚀. The resilience carried us through every challenge. And you know what? I'd embark on this journey all over again in a heartbeat! A heartfelt thank you to every person involved in organizing this event, especially and not only to Carlos Rodrigues, Joao Garcia, Filipa Bernardo, and Carolina Ferreira Baptista, Gina Palha.😊 Thank you to the inspiring invited speakers: Isha Datar, Mark Post, Vítor Espírito Santo, and Andrew Stout. CellAgri Portugal, INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, the conference moderators Lorenzo Pastrana Castro, Simão Soares, Deolinda Silva, Manuela Pintado, Rita Abranches, Joaquim Cabral, José Bragança, Isha Datar, Dwayne Holmes, PhD, Seth Roberts, Francesco Montanari, Vincent Laizé, Maria João Gonçalves Maia, the 23 sponsors and all the 49 personalities that were on stage during these 1.5 days, played a crucial role in making this event a success. And let's not forget the media partner CNN Portugal, and the institutional partners PortugalFoods, Município de Braga, FLAD - Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, who were also integral to our success. Thank you to all the attendees from academia and business! #ConferenceSuccess #Cellagriculture #portugal #Gratitude #FLAD Grupo Lusiaves, Cell4Food, Corium Biotech, José Teixeira, Portugal Ventures, PFx Biotech, iBB - Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences , S2AQUAcoLAB Roslin Technologies, Tufts University, European Space Agency - ESA, Good Dog Food, RESPECTfarms, Meatable, cellva, 3D Bio-Tissues, Sparkfood
